Growing up, my family spent Easter on my grandfather’s farm. Granddaddy lived in a two-bedroom farmhouse built circa 1921. I would sit at the table in the dining room and look out of the old windows, their glass panes growing wavy with age.
Granddaddy was not a Catholic; he was a long-standing member of the local Christian Church. And while he wasn’t thrilled with my mother’s conversion I never heard him utter one word against it. He always treated my father, Pater Familias, with the utmost respect and love.
My memories of that time are a mishmash: a hazy wash of tobacco fields, wide brim hats, yellow dresses, and an orchid corsage. And of course, he made sure we had giant Easter baskets – plastic bushels filled with chocolate, cellophane grass, and love. It’s the same sort of sensibility and emotion I want for my own children, but with the added bonus of theological joy. If we’re celebrating the Resurrection of our Lord and Redeemer, why not fill up their baskets with totally awesome Catholic loot?

When I think back to my childhood Easters, one thing stands out in my mind.
My grandfather and extended family may not have been Catholic, but there was definitely an ecumenical spirit moseying about that southern farmhouse gestalt. It’s the sort of experience that not only colored my memories – it shapes my present, and that of my children, too. Granddaddy’s been gone since the mid-’90s; my uncle who inherited the house has passed away, too. Someone else owns the land and the house now, but not my memories. Our family traditions live on in our own home, with the added blessing of our Catholic faith.
